Beware of hydro-alcoholic gel getting in children's eyes!

Mar 5, 2020 | Eye health

Beware of accidental splashes of Hydro-alcoholic gel in the eyes of children!

Installed at hand level, the hydro-alcoholic gel dispensers are also at eye level for younger children.

consequence: between May 11 and August 24, 2020,ANSES - National Health Security Agency recorded 63 cases of children, on average aged 4 years, presenting symptoms following the projection of hydro-alcoholic solution in the eye. 75% of these accidents took place in a store or shopping center !

To prevent new accidents, the French Society of Ophthalmology (SFO) recommends that adults use hydro-alcoholic gel and then apply it directly to children's hands, completely avoiding letting them use the dispensers.

What to do in case of eye contact ?

The first step to perform, if hydro-alcoholic gel is splashed into the eye, is to immediately rinse it under a stream of water for about fifteen minutes. After rinsing, an ophthalmologist or a poison control center should be consulted as serious eye damage can occur shortly after the accident.
