Air pollution: its effects on our eyes

Jun 4, 2019 | Eye health

On World Environment Day on June 5, the debate will not leave air pollution out. Each year, around 7 million people worldwide die prematurely from the causes of air pollution (Source: WHO).

What do we know about its effects on our eyes?

  • Symptoms of discomfort include irritation, tingling, sensitivity to light, sensations of a foreign body following short-term exposure,
  • and infections (conjunctivitis, keratitis) following chronic exposure.

Air pollution can even exacerbate existing eye disease by damaging the surface of the eye. However, its role is most essential since it brings comfort to vision, lubricates the eye and prevents any microbial infection.

How to protect yourself against heavily polluted air?

  • Moisturize your eye as much as possible with artificial tears,,
  • vent the indoors of your home or office,
  • Remember to blink often.

If symptoms persist, it is recommended to consult a doctor or an ophthalmologist.
